Giving & Receiving Love

I only started yoga initially because I had lost a lot of flexibility and my back bothered me after any type of physical activity. Now over a year later no more back pain not to mention I'm way more flexible. But it goes farther beyond my physical being but more to my mental and spiritual being. I'm much calmer than I used to be even in the mist of great loss. I'm make a concerted effort each and every week to be at your class because I need this in my life. I so very much appreciate you being my teacher and mentor and can't even begin to express my gratitude towards you. Thanks for changing my life...
Warm regards, Dave

Driving to class one Wednesday night, I had a battle in my head with the voice that tries to tell me that I will not succeed. The little nagging voice that has followed me since I was a child, who constantly wins the fight and makes me believe that I am out of place and should not try new things. This night I came out on top of that battle, and I walked right into what would turn out to be exactly where I needed to be to learn how to take control of that nonsense happening in my head.
I walked into class and this little body full of energy a thousand times the size of her physical being greeted me. An instant calmness came over me. The welcoming, caring, and sincere emotions I could feel coming from the teacher made it enjoyable to be somewhere new and trying something new. Normally this experience would have me shaking and full of anxiety. This gracious yogi introduced
herself as Ali.
Week after week I spent my Wednesday nights with Ali. It was something I looked forward to every week. Not only the physical challenge of her class, but the mental challenge she gave me as well. There is just something in the words she chooses, and the voice that carries them to me. Yoga turned into a form of therapy, and Ali turned into not only a teacher but a friend. Taking my seizures and fibromyalgia into consideration, Ali instructed me, guided me, and reassured me to the most inner layers of my mind and soul that I was doing exactly what I needed to do. I never ever felt bad about myself, like I have in other yoga classes, if I had to skip a move or take child’s pose. I learned from Ali that listening to my body and giving myself the ability to say ‘no, I can’t do this’ was ok and exactly what I should do. (don’t get me wrong, this little lady did also whoop my butt into shape)
As my practice and knowledge grew throughout my time with Ali, so did my confidence. The encouragement from this wonderful teacher, and her motivation to help each and every student who walked through her door did wonders for me and many others. I would watch new students walk in and you could see the way Ali addressed each one. She just picks up on people’s vibes and can talk to each person in a manner that suits them and reaches them internally. A true teacher. Making everyone comfortable, while encouraging everyone to push themselves to their physical limits (whatever they are that day) is a mix that only one other instructor I have ever met has. Also, as a whole the energy in Ali’s classes were like no other. The students engaged one another, encouraged one another. We learned together. From pigeon to wall splits, we were one in that class. No one was better than other; no one was more ‘yogi’ than the other which is a big problem in a lot of classes I have been to.
I have honestly stopped going to the Yoga studio where Ali was a previously an instructor as much as I used to. No other class is like hers and I do not get any fulfillment, physically or mentally, out of the class that is now offered on Wednesday nights. I truly believe that any studio would be lucky to have Ali join their team of teachers, and every new student that gets to learn from her will be able to carry a piece of her energy around with them like I do every day. - Carrie Rentler
